I personally think your milage is fine, but I live in L.A. California and never let my gas tank get below 1/2 full for two reasons 1. there could be water and other sentiments in my gas tank I wouldn't want in my fuel lines or engine 2. I live in earth quake country and wouldn't want to be caught with no gas in my car.

A lot of the cheaper gas out there has a high alcohol content and some of that alcohol just evaporates into the air and never gets used by your engine. I too price shop because Cal. gas is the highest priced in the country, I paid $3.46 a gal. for Union 76 gas on Sunday.... the best price I could find.

Don't feel bad rockslinger, that's what I paid on Sunday here in New Mexico too! All I can say is we're all getting screwed out west. I have a buddy from Dallas who came to visit a while back and he said we're getting jipped here in NM.
