Honda is recalling 180,000 Civics made in their Alliston, Ontario plant.
Apparently water and salt can corrode the wheel bearings which can potentially lead to the wheel falling off.

All:
Have a 2005 civic with 39k miles, started humming when driving. Went to dealer needed front wheel bearing ??? !! 3 k over 36k warranty, $300 fix !! What a screw job. Owned a lot of cars but never replaced a wheel bearing that was listed as sealed this soon in 30 years of driving. My civic was built in Aug 05 wonder if I got the 2006 bearing problem on my late 2005 car ? PS I also had my civics fuel door break,, I have a 1991 Legend with 190k , never replaced a bearing or a fuel door cable in 16 years and I'm the original owner,, my civic is Canadian JUNK.

Back on topic -- my Honda Owner's Page isn't listing the recall yet but I have a call in to the dealer to find out when the process will begin. I'm betting they don't know yet, but the news story is going to make the owner's hit 'em hard and fast.

Maybe I'm wrong but the sticker on the inside of the door might list where your car was made.
Or you could always print off the article and bring it to your nearest dealer. They would tell you if your car is affected. Besides, they do the work and Honda will reimburse the dealer for their time to fix it.

Here is some more info on the recall --> http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=751477
My 05 has also been noisy, The front bearings are different, I have not crossed over the rear bearings though.

Also: I am reading that the recall is only going to replace a seal on the ABS brake sensor that COULD allow water/salt into the bearing causing damage. Bearing damage is not a quiet thing and people would have to live with a lot of noise before I would think a wheel would actually fall off!

All the recall VIN series' start with "2" - which means Canadian made (the Alliston Plants, since that's the only place civics are made in Canada). If your VIN does not begin with a "2", then it's not affects (VIN's beginning with "1" are US made).

Gearbox, that's true. And, thanks. But can't one also pick up a phone, or better still, go to a dealer and ask an SA or SM to check to see if there are any open issues on your vehicle.
I just bought my kid an 07 Si coupe and asked my SA for a complete printout of all work ever done to the car. I was amazed of the list of recall work performed. He also gave me another list of all Honda parts ever installed on my car as well. It also was long.
A few items I remember was an ABS recall, a noise from the rear resulting the replacement of both rear rotors and all rear pads, the front rotors had been turned and a rear(?) boot was replaced because it had a hole in it, there were a few other items of no consequence.
But one thing of interest: the SA told me there had been a lot of issues with third gear and should it happen to bring it in since it was a 'simple' fluid change. When I mentioned this to my kid, he said it had actually happened a few times. So, she goes in the shop next week....

Re: 2006-2007 Recall: Wheels may fall off (no joke)
wow......your wheels will not fall off.....Honda made an incorrect seal around the rear wheel speed sensor. If over a VERY VERY extended period of time it will cause damage from being exposed to salt & junk from roads. I have seen some pretty bad wheel bearings but never a wheel coming off.
I have probably looked at 5,000 new civics & none of them are affected. You bring it in, look at the seal, if it's torn you replace. Thats it!
This is how people blow things out of proportion......Gotta love the car business, alot of misinformed people out there! Affects EX,LX, & DX...Si's are not affected
oh and to comment on the gentleman before....Si's rarely have shifting or 3rd gear problems...mostly I see it as a result of incorrect driving. Also, the rear rotors were probably be replaced because they were warped from doing high speed stops.....honda will warranty most warpage...not hondas fault......just clearing some things up.....
