Rep Power: 0 Oil change effects on MPG?
I recently changed my oil for the first time at about 4750 miles. I did not go to the dealer just the local jiffy lube. Before changing the oil i was averaging 35-36 mpg easily. however after my oil change i am at about 29 mpg or about 60 miles less per tank. ive been reading on this board that the dealer oil have additives and such i was jsut wondering if this noticable of a difference occured for anyone else too? It has to be the oil because i fill up at the same 2 gas stations every time and i drive to work the same way and have done nothing else different.

Rep Power: 0 i have checked the receipt from th oil change and it says it is 5w20 like the owner manual says. does anyone have any other idea of what it could be, i do not know much about oil but the manual says somehting about using premium 5w20. is that anything that could be the issue?

if a little gas mileage is all you lost, just make sure they use the right kind next time.. there are many acceptable weights of oil to put ina car... the goal is to put the thinnest oil you can without having it too thin so it slipps past the piston rings... and since modern engines have very tight clearences, 5w20 is the prefered oil for hondas... now as far as making sure you get the right oil, is to bring your own... since obviously you have a few thousand miles on your car now, i'd say go with mobil 1 full synthetic... and stick with it... it's the best readily available oil for under 6 bucks a quart.

I've Experienced and heard too many horror stories regarding Jiffy Lube and other quick stop oil change places to ever take my vehicle to one.
For example, i once took my vehicle into Jiffy Lube to have my Tranny flushed. I indicated the vehicle required ATF +3, he nodded as if he knew what I was talking about, and the guy put in Dexron/Mercron with a bottle of Friction Modifier. Needless to say the transmission slipped like crazy. Ended up taking it back to Dodge.
Bottom line, unless you are able to visually see the bottle they use, you have no idea what grade was poured in there.
Best advice my BF ever suggested: Either do the work yourself or take it to the dealers and have them change it and stamp the maintence log.

Rep Power: 296 they probably used 10w30 weight oil. its ok for the car, but you will lose gas mileage due to the viscasity of the oil. Just change it with 5w20 like everyone said. Best way to do it, is just do it yourself. I always got around 35-38mpg on my 7th gen civic when i used mobile 1 5w30. I used 5w30 since 5w20 is difficult to find.
