So far with 900 miles on my new Civic EX with manual transmission I have measured three tanks for fuel efficiency and I'm really disappointed...my first tank was mostly highway and I got 37 mpg...2nd tank combination hwy/city got 25 mpg and the 3rd tank also combo hwy/city only got 21 mpg. It's getting worse! Can anybody else share what they are getting? I was told it should get better after the first oil change, not sure what that has to do with anything. Dealer says it should improve after 1500-3000 miles...any truth to that?

Well, the first tank sounds about right at 37mpg. The other two are way off, specially if your driving hasn't changed dramatically. Maybe you want to double check the math? Maybe you used the incorrect trip mileage? If those numbers are correct, I would go thru another tankfull and if the results are similar, see the dealer with all your numbers.
BTW, my LX w/ manual transmission has 8900 miles and the first tank I got 34mpg. Since then I get above 36mpg all the time.

Well A Lot Depends On Your Driving Habits First Of All, And A Lot With Your Shifting Style In A Manual.
I Usually Shift Around 3500 Rpms And Ive Got Mods And An Increased Air Fuel Mixture Ration And Im Getting Around 32 Miles Per Gallon. Also When Your Fuel Light Comes On With 2 Bars Left You Got About Another 70-80 Miles So Make Sure You Facter In That Extra Milage.

"Don't forget to factor in that extra mileage??" The easy (and very accurate) way to calculate MPG is to take the miles traveled since the last fill up and divide it by what it took to fill the tank for the current refueling session.

well yea you can do it that way, i prefer ti run it all the way down, not all gas station pump are gonna click all at the same amount and also because of the sensor location in the tank, it may take the whole tank to get an accurate messure.

Your mileage, based on types of driving, matches my Civic as well as my wife's pretty closely. We both have auto trannys.

I have a similar problem, everyone i know who has a civic isn't getting the 30mpg city...I've been keeping a log of my mileage so far, I have about 1600 miles, and i have an ex coupe, here is my log

I talked to the dealership they said alot of ppl are having the same problem it will take 3k-5k to break in before i get that mileage...

I have a tip. I used to only get like 28 but i changed my shift point from 3000 to 2500. I accelerate really slowly i know but now I get about 35 mpg. Most auto trannies shift at about 2500 too. You also have to factor in how long your trips are (longer trips = better gas mileage), the weather, how many passengers are in the car, what your driving style is like, what the driving conditions are etc. etc.

I consistently get 31-34 mpg, and I always drive it hard. I have a heavy foot and I'm very impressed with my gas mileage. I do a lot of interstate and city driving so thats a pretty good average. When I got 31mpg i had a lot more city and country driving... the 34 was a lot more interstate driving... but all the readings were mixed with interstate and city/country driving. I also have a manual.

If I got any less, I'd be severely concerned. I had a 2005 Cavalier automatic that got only 28 on average.

just reviving an old thread here. I've been keeping track of mpg too, just to see if civic is a econo box they say it is. my best was 40 mpg when the car was relativley new, and then it dropped alittle, and in the past month going back and forth to school it is averaging 26-30, which had me pissed. The last fill up i had i finally reached 30mpg again and i was sorta happy. Yesterday had done alot of weekend driving and had already used a quarter of a tank, so b/c gas here in NY is now 2.50( i am on the verge of exploding in my pants that's so low!) i decided to fill it up again before mon. what blew my mind was it took 3 gal. to fill her up, and i had already driven 148 miles!!! now i dunno if i'm doing my math wrong but thats around 45 mpg!!!!!! WTF!!!! that better than honda's estimates!!! i did strictly highway driving out the beach and back, but damn that's redic, using mid grade gas. I just thought i'd share my insane gas experience b/c it prob never happen again. my 92 celica got 30mpg one time and that was freaky so i guess this stuff happens.

There are a ton of factors in fuel economy. Stop and go traffic is a killer. Running air conditioning has alot to do with it also. Not to mention oil, air flow, and tire pressure among other things. You cannot for one second believe the EPA estimate on city driving. They do not perform tests that simulate real driving conditions. If you want real world estimates then read Consumer Reports annual car issue which gives real world numbers from their extensive tests. EPA estimates are close on highway mpg but not 100% either. If you think you got duped by EPA estimates, talk to someone who owns an RX8. Many owners (i was one of them) got around 10 mpg less than the city estimate with mixed driving. Im talking like 14 mpg! I used to get 18-20 mpg with 90% highway driving.

Personnaly, I still get about 33mpg out of my civic. I drive moderatly spirited and do about 75-80 mph on the hiway. I hit 13500 miles today. There is no reason a civic shouldnt get 300 miles on a tank of gas. I get close to 400 sometimes.

I have been receiving anywhere from 33 to 35 MPG depending on how much stop and go traffic I am sitting in. Drove thru the mountains in W.V. on way to Myrtle Beach and received 39 mpg. Was very impressed on how well the car took the hills on the turnpike. I just set the cruise and kept a constant speed.

I have a 2006 Civic EX and drive around 4200 miles a month. I generally cruise at 70 mph and 95% of my driving is on the highway. While I was still tinkering with my mileage I found that if I cruised at 75 i would recieve around 40 MPG, and if I cruised at 75 with the AC on I would recieve around 37.5 MPG. When i really beat the snot out of my civic with some spirited driving in the hills around my house, The worst mileage I will recieve is 34 MPG, but again, this still includes some highway miles.

When I purchased the car in April I was skeptical about buying an automatic over a stick to get better mileage, but I have not been dissatisfied as of yet. I just rolled over 30,000 miles last weekend without a problem to report.

Has anyone noticed that you can't get simple things like air filters and windshield wipers at the local Advance Auto Parts? I've had to purchase these things from the dealer and self install...

knw what freaked me out the other day when i was home, the Hybrid at 33 mph steadily w/a/c on marked 108 mpg, and with the a/c off it marks 150 mpg, but i highly doubt i would ever drive that slow.

I have a 06 honda civic ex coupe...I got from 32 to 35 mixed driving and 38 to 39 on hwy, mine should get better after break in.

I seem to be getting just just under 30 in mixed driving. I have been very patient on the acceleration. Still under 2000 miles on the car.

I agree with you, I got my 2006 civic labor day weekend and i have about 4000 miles now( which is a lot but im hoping to cut down on driving soon) and I always get close to 400 a tank. However i dont really have that much stop and go traffic....

I have been getting 21-25 in my 07 Si. Not a lot long distance driving yet. Can't wait for summer when I was getting better mileage when I owned my 05 EX SE. I have just over 900 miles on the engine.
