2006 Civic Navi: how to make it play DVD movies?

Is it possible to get the Navi on the 2006 Civic EX to play DVD movies? I've found hacks to change the background but nothing for this...

I highly doubt a factory dvd nav unit will ever play movies because it isn't designed to do so, even if you added some external attachment.

if it is a dvd nav unit like mazda's, then it can.... you just have to add the right software... it's just a matter of time i say..

Absolutely! I don't remember if it was the Civic, but I read somewhere that one vehicle's navi display was simply NTSC analog video (horrible, but very compatible). Worst case, we could splice into that with a switch and tuck a portable DVD player into the dash somewhere. Best case, though, would be if Alpine hid an MPEG-2 decoder in the head unit somewhere. Heh..

lol that's all software though... wich means if there is enough memory for a software upgrade, all you'd have to do is figure out a hack to put the decoder on there... i'm certain there is available memory on there since they will have to be upgradable

Back when I had my 03 accord with nav, a company had come out with an inline connection from the "brain" to the screen where you could switch back and forth.
Haven't done research on that in a long time.

hey guys, sometime in the near future i plan on trading in my 7th gen for an 8th gen civic Si. i was wondering if those Navi's are any good or even needed for someone. i mean, i don't think i wanna get my Si with the Navi but i was wondering if they make the Si without the Navi's and if it's still ok to not get it versus getting it. i hope it won't look ugly without the Navi in the dash. what do you guys think?

I like my navi. I'm still getting it all set up to read the files right and give me the most pertinent data so I can enjoy the music with the least amount of effort.
As far as the actual navigation, it's really sped up in the last 3 years. I had an accord where it took quite a bit longer to re-calc if you missed a turn.
One disadvantage, which really applies to this thread is that I don't believe you can use the in-line video inputs since the DVD drive for the navigation disc is no longer in the trunk.
Short answer: I'd get it
