Coolant Change With Engine Block Drain

This post is intended to show viewers that there is an engine block drain on Honda Civics. I use the Helm's 2006-2010 Service Manual for Honda Civics. As I understand it, this is the 'official' shop manual by Honda. You can order it for $50 from Helm Publications. I am not a professional mechanic nor am I giving advice or recommendations to anyone but just simply sharing my experience. Do with it as you please but be careful.

I know most don't use the engine block drain for coolant draining but I figure since the manufacturer put it there, they must have intended for it to be used during coolant changes. Especially since they recommend going so long between coolant changes. Using this drain should allow you to get more coolant out of the system for replacement.

I used a 19 mm socket to remove the engine block drain. I did not reset the maintenance minder since I want to be 'reminded' to change the coolant more often than the manufacturer recommends.

The first picture below shows where the engine block coolant drain bolt is located at the end of my screwdriver. The next series of 6 pictures are copies of the manual explaining and showing how to change the coolant according to the Honda Service Manual. Don't forget to put a new washer on the engine block drain bolt and add appropriate sealant to the bolt threads if you do this yourself.
