2001 honda civic, trying to diagnos what component I've blown
I drive a 2001 honda civic, while driving the other night (doing about 30-40mph) my car suddenly stalled out while in motion with no previous warning of any abnormal temperature fluctuation. Without even realizing what had happened I tried to turn the engine over instinctively. The car turned right over but it sounded a little rough and almost immediately over heated sending off big clouds of burning anti-freeze from under my hood. The car stalled out again and wouldn't turn over after that second attempt. When I checked the radiator I saw no inherent signs of any blown hoses or specific leaks, however all of the fluid was gone. My timing belt appears to still be in place, so I'm guessing that my water pump may have failed? Although I didn't notice any colored smoke coming from my exhaust, I'm wondering if any of these symptoms could be related to my head gasket? Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be the core issue here?

Head gasket, most definitely. It ate all your coolant and spat it out the exhaust and between the head and the block. Probably has nothing to do with the water pump, but it can't hurt to replace it while you've got the head off.

Engine is probably not toast. Pull the head, take it to a machine shop and have them flycut it (about $50 if they have to pull the valves if you don't) and put a new head gasket on it. Your motor won't start because you don't have any compression. You've got a problem no doubt, but nothing too serious.

most places charge around $1k for a head gasket swap and checking for warpage plus getting the head ready by milling and cleaning and compression checks. to me thats worth more than the $600 motor. the block could also be warped too.

I guess I look at it as it will take me about 7 hours to do all the work, $30 for a skim and dip at the machine shop and $35 for a new head gasket. So at $75 ($5 for lunch on the way back from the machine shop each time) and a Saturday, I don't look at it as a serious problem.
