Crunching is never a good thing when... checked your fluid level there?
Once it gets low or is leaking this can occur

bye bye gears.. ok i know it seems like something you would never attempt yourself but i watched someone tear down a tranny once and manuals are SO simple its not even funny... just order a new second gear from the dealer and some new syncros while your'e at it... and just get a "transmittion rebuilds for dummies" (i'm sure some version of this book exists but i just made that title up)

ah so it can be done yourself?
I always thought of it as a black box that was just impossible to touch myself...

I would just check with someone about it being a grinding noise, might just be the clutch or pressure plate that needs replacing...
