Full Synthetic oil

Do you use full synthetic, semi-synthetic or non-synthetic oil on your car?

If I had a 2006 model or anything from 2000+ I'd go synthetic, but for anything older I think sticking with semi-synth can do the job.

Opinions?

I ALWAYS use Mobile 1 Super Syn Full Synthetic. I get 5 qts @ Walmart for $21.00. a good filter & I Know that I'm protected. Strange ticks disappear, you get a tic more power & better milage. Now couple FULL Syn oil with a K&N tipped CAI & you'll really tell the difference! Ric

i had an 02 si and then when i sold it i had an escort wagon with 160,000 miles for a year before my 06 coupe i just baught, and the pistopn rings were smoked in the escort if i used regular oil id have to add half a court a week and by the 4th day of having clean oil in it it would be like black water, so i started using the valvoline maxlife synthetic and the oil stayed clean for about 2 months and i only had to ad about a half court a month so oil does make the difference not to mention when i had my built 82 trans am if i didnt use good synthetic oil i would lose about half my oil pressure, the best synthetic oil is of course deep purple followed closely by amsoil, amsoil is actually the inventor of synthetic oil they were the first to come out with it.

how ever in my nice cars i use full synthetic and i change my oil every 2500 miles, with an additive for friction reduction usually cd2.

But wait isnt synthetic thinner oil than semi synthetic? so it would make that you had to add more synthetic than semi?

weights/viscosity also very much relates to how old your car is.
Older cars generally require a heavier oil compared to new cars.

I use Amsoil in everything and have had good performance. I use the tranny oil and motor oil. If you would like more info send me an email.

Mobil 1 is my usual. I think its completely synthetic.. there is one thats half synthetic though, i think thats sufficient for most cars anyway and cheaper than 100% synth.

i think the gentleman above was refering to royal purple.. not deep purple.. i dont' usually put classic rock bands in my car.. lol.. royal purple has been the cause of many engine failures i know of.. so i stick w/ amsoil in my race motors.. but mobil one is more readily availible.... and way cheaper.. it is plenty for a daily driver. mobil 1 is always 100% synthetic.. however, they have mobil drive clean(conventional..) and mobil semisyn... wich is the part synthetic.. but if it has the big one on it, it's full synthetic.. the reason most newer cars use thinner oil and have longer oil change intervals is because they have much tighter clearances than older engines.. wich makes them more efficient but at the same time more fragile.. my friend ran 15W50 in his mazdaspeed protege because he figured that's what the turbo rx7's run, but it ruined his oil pump,. cost him several grand and about6 months without his car.. but that's another story for another day.

heh deep purple

Royal Purple? cant say I am aware of that one.

To be honest I dont place alot of importance on oil, in the end its there to lubricate and these arent race machines.

From a experiment my auto mechanics class did about this actually proved that the 89 cent oil was just as good as the 3.50 dollar oil..weird huh. I cant remember the name of the really good stuff but its in a different type of container than say mobil or something. That was the only expensive stuff that actually didnt stop the machine. Ill find out what it was and post it up here.

3.50 oil isn't mobil one or royal purple or amsoil though.. synthetic is far superior no doubt about it.. experiments mean nothing when there is real world experience available...

Ok guys nice thread!
I didnt expect this to go to 2 pages hehe

I wouldnt mind seeing some real tests done to compare the effects of certain types of oil.

I have always used conventional oil but always pondered switching to synthetic. When you switch, is there any paticular instructions or do you just do a regular oil change? I ask because I had heard that you cannot mix the two and you never really get all the oil out during a oil and filter change.
