Who services your car?

Do you send your car to a mechanic for a service, or do it yourself?

I know I do pretty much everything myself, the only thing I've had done at the mechanic was a head gasket because I was too lazy to do it myself

I can figure out the basic stuff on my own, then my dad can do the stuff a step up, but most of the time I just send it off to a mechanic. It's pricey but I've never felt the need to take the time to learn to do it myself.

I do oil changes and basic services myself.
if i have a problem i cant figure out then i'll take it to a mechanic, but they are a complete rip off so I prefer not to...

I do everything myself i dont trust any garage unless i can watch them do w/e they are doing or if i know someone there who can do a good job. I've had things go wrong because some mechanics aren't paying attention at what they are doing, lastest being i got a weld on my header downpipe and they forgot to tighten the bolts to my cat back up again so one morning with frost all over my window started up my car as usuall and turned on the defroster and all this exhaust poured into my interior through the vents. I was pretty mad

A lot of mechanics can cheat you as well, which is why it's good to know the basics about cars.

"Oh you got a broken ferohwiorh shaft.... that'll be around $600..."
Good to find a good, trustworthy fair mechanic and STICK WITH THEM.

The first thing you should do is get familiar with parts prices for your car, so you know when the mechanic is overcharging.

Secondly, I find a place to buy parts myself, rather than letting the mechanic buy it.
Then his charges are all labor and I knew if Im getting screwed

Yes that's a good technique too. I do that occasionally with my Dodge Intrepid (not entirely mine) when I have to get it serviced. I know the basic part prices so that helps me get a good deal.

I have a local mechanic who I completely trust.
I dont take it to just anyone, but only someone I know I can leave it with and it wont come back in worse condition then when I dropped it off.

I have had some nightmare mechanics that taught me my lesson.

Honda charge an arm and a leg for services, plus its well known that car manufacturers rip you off on parts and labor costs.
They say things will take a long time but they are quick, and they have all apprentice kids working on your car.

One of my best friends is a Service Advisor at the local Honda Store. So I *ALWAYS* take it there. Premium service.
