Rep Power: 0 DIY Relocatinf spare tire under the car (no pics)
Equiment needed:
One 1/2" Threaded steel rod (pref. fine thread)
Two 2"x6"x1/4" steel plates.
5/8" Drill bit.
Drill (duh)
Two 2" long x 1/2" Bolts with lockwashers and nuts.
Three 1/2" hole 1" across lockwashers.
Five 1/2" Nuts that match threaded rod..
Steps:
1: Remove Spare tire from trunk.
2: Jack up car as high as you can get the rear Use jackstands to hold it at that height (safety first!)
3: Find a place underneath where the spare will best fit. Once you find a good spot, use the jack to hold up the spare tire. In the center of the rim for the spare, Mark it using a piece of chalk..or paint marker.
4: Get that spare tire out of the way. Use a center punch where you marked . Use a small (1/4") Drill bit and drill through your trunk floor. then use the 5/8" bit. and drill through the smaller hole.
5: Now drill 5/8" holes through the exact center of each plate.
6: Bolt one plate to the hole you drilled at the top of the trunk floor (inside the car) to hold it firmly in place. Drill holes on each side of the plate. about 2.5" From your center bolt... Remote the bolt you used as a support. Now. use the 2 bolts and Bolt the plate on using te outside holes. Make sure you use the lockwashers!!! 2 people helps great to keep the nuts from turning under the car
7: you now have a firm mounting for the spare. Now the Threaded rod comes into play. cut it to about 12" Long to make it easier to work with. from inside the trunk. Thread 2 of the nuts back to back onto the rod about 1" or so. slip on a washer and Feed the rod down the nice hole you have. Twist the 2 nuts against each other so that your tightening them together, this keeps the rod from ever being able to screw out. If you have a Wedling maching (Midas does) Just use 1 nut and weld the rd onto the plate (BEST OPTION)
8: Underneath the car. You should have 11" of rod under your car . Now, use the lock washer then the nut and thread the nut right to the top of the trunk floor. You need 2 people again(if you didn't weld it). Have one persin in the trunk using a wrench to hold the top bolt. You underneath the car will also use a wrench and tighten the living helsinky out of the bottom bolt. This should now NEVER come loose.
9: drill a hole through the center of the other plate. Put the spare underneath the car again. with the threaded rod being in the mounting hole of the rim. Slide the plate onto the rod (using the hole in the plate poeple )thread 1 nut up with lockwasher. Again have your friend in the trunk with a wrench hold the top nut to prevent the top nut from turning (if you didn't have it welded which I so highly reccomend so the rod will NEVER turn that way) Now tighten the hell out of the nut. Remove jack from holding spare tire.
10: under car, thread up a second nut to use as a lock. (like you did on top if you didn't get it welded. Voila!!!
Getting the rod welded to the steel plate in the trunk is by far the best thing to do. Just drill the hole, take it Midas, or pepboys..or any muffler shop..and have them weld it on for you. They probably won't even charge you for it.
Cheers

Rep Power: 0 Would it be possible to just use the metal thing that holds the spare tire in place in the trunk. Just Weld a nut onto the steel plate that you bolt to the trunk floor and screw that bolt in???? Or would it not be strong enough/long enough???? Just a thought

Rep Power: 0 Using the OEM Bolt is not really strong enough to hold the tire inverted. You can use the OEM plate to hold it no problem, but you'd have to uprade hte side of the bolt, and lockwasher which once you take out. Your'd have to strip your trunk to get back in.
