Rep Power: 280 what does a bad CV joint mean?
well, i've had one replaced on my old car before so i know the symptoms of it going bad (knocking noise when turning). so does anyone know what would happen if i didnt replace a bad CV joint? any adverse affects? oh, this isnt for my 7thgen, but for a beater (civic again). so, if its not serious then i'd rather save my money. thanks

Rep Power: 306 it's not that serious, but besides ruining the joint, i suppose over time it could damage wheel bearings and tranny output bearings. But primarily, a broken cv boot will allow dirt to get into the joint itself, giving it serious play, which is the clicking you hear when you turn. but in the long run, thats a different story.

Rep Power: 0 You're talking about the joint itself, not the boot, right?
The main thing you'd have to worry about is having it seize (as tacheon mentioned), or the opposite: it could fall apart on you. This would cause the CV axle to hang down onto the ground, and hope it doesn't catch on anything. If this happens you'd lose any drive to the wheels, unless you have a limited-slip diff. The shaft with the broken joint would just turn, and no power would be transferred to your other wheel.

Rep Power: 0 I had a bad CV joint in my old accord and i never got it fixed until i was taking a left turn and the cv joint pulled out and my right side of my car hit the ground and my tire and everything attached went 90 degrees to the car pretty much.
Bent the rim, the right fender, cracked the wheel well, pretty much f'ed up the whole right side suspension and everything else. Also held up 5 o'clock rush hour cause i was sitting in the middle of one of the biggest intersections here. I have learned my lesson now first sign of that creacking sound im getting them replaced.
