Question What is the proper way to relearn RCM/PCM idle

Is the following the most proper way to reset ECM/PCM after install K&N air filter??

Does it mean I do not need to reset ECU after install K&N ??
or thay are the same??

44. Do the ECM/PCM idle learn procedure.
¡V Make sure all electrical items are turned off.
¡V Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at
3,000 rpm with no load (in Park or Neutral) until
the radiator fan comes on.
¡V Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes with the
throttle fully closed and with all electrical items
off.

Here's what I thought, and remember this is IDLE learn procedure:

1. disconnect battery OR remove FI-ECU fuse. Let sit for 15mins to make sure everything gets reset. Reconnect battery, or put back fuse.

2. Start car and let idle for about 10 mins, to make sure the car gets up to temperature. Do not press the gas at all.

3. Turn car off and then back on again. Go drive around.

Eventually the ecu will learn everything by driving for a couple hundred miles if you don't reset it.

The first one is right. It's straight from the Honda Service Manual.

As far as everybody removing the FI-ECU fuse for 15 minutes, it's just wasting time. The ECU resets after 10 seconds.

Hi, I install drop-in K&N filter without reseting ECU, I do not feel any different

However , IF I removing FI-ECU for 10 second.
then following the instruction in my first thread

Now, My car really act very different with drop-in K&N filter !!!
1. My Civic AT EX Engine noise level down @3000 RPM, Now I can hear high pitch sound form vtec. It use to be give me loud low pitch noise that cover up the high pitch sound form engine.

2. When driving at 40 MPH in 4th gear with foot off the gas pedal , the RPM did not drop under 1100 RPM, it use to drop under 1000 RPM such that I can hear very low pitch sound @ 40MPH. Hmm, NOW ,after reset ECU, I need apply more break to stop the car from 40 MPH to 0 MPH
( when gear in netual, RPM drop back to 800 RPM)
3. At Stop , If I push the gas pedal all the way down , I can feel rpm reach 5000RPM faster then before I reset ECU, However, I feel less torque when RPM below 2500 in normal driving?? I am wonder is the ECU still learning my driving style??

K&N dropin filters will maybe give you 1hp. It's identical to stock, only it flows slightly more air. You shouldn't notice any difference. And your car will fully adjust on it's own after a few hundred miles of driving.

Allright Gearbox, Thanks again for your quick answer.

I have a feeling that the default ECU setting of my civic does not fully optimize yet when it ship to car dealership.
( I am not sure if Honda ever run the engine at 3000RPM for few minutes then idle for 5 minutes to fine tune the engine for every new car before ship to dealer, or they just let it adjust by itself later, just like your reply)

othewise How come my car feel lots of different response from engine after reset my ECU??

Because your computer is relearning all the fuel maps and conversions. I've pulled the battery alot when installing stuff, so I know. A couple hundred miles later it should feel normal again.

^^^ gearbox with the good answers again.

I yanked my ECU/FI fuse for 1 cigarette's time after I installed my Ractive SRI and it took it about a tank of gas to realize that if it give me more power I beat the hell out of it less.

I reset the ECU 3 times a day, different method get different result.

Method 1
unplug FI-ECU fuse for 30 seconds, put it back, start the car idle for 5 minutes.

Method 2
unplug FI-ECU fuse for 20 seconds, put it back, start engine , hold engine at 3000rpm for 6 minutes, then idle for 5 minutes

Method 3
unplug FI-ECU fuse for 20 seconds, put it back, start drive the car

Method 4
unplug FI-ECU fuse for 20 seconds, put it back, start engine, hold engine at 3000 RPM for 3 minutes, then idle for 3 minutes.

well, method 1 2 and 3 result are the same to me.

however, Procedure 4 give me the best engine response as soon as I start driving

Please tell me what is going on??

Why Honda menu recommand to relearn ECU after disconnect battery?? What is their reason??
