Tire pressure

What tire pressure is best for good mileage?
In the Hybrid that is, my friends gf just got one, and she doesnt know what to pump the tires to.

Is 35psi good?

35-40psi is ok. I go about 37psi on my car (not a hybrid though).

How much does the hybrid weigh? It will very much depend on this.

I believe the curb weight is 2732 lbs. I have heard some of the hybrids come with a low PSI of as low as 30 PSI. You can probably boost that up to as much as 38 PSI and be safe and improve your mileage.

How much better milage could you get at 38psi?
I cant imagine the difference would be too significant.

I would be pretty safe to say you'd definatly notice the difference if you bumped it up to 38psi, i wouldnt go to overboard though. What size tires does it have? If they are pretty damn small/skinny dont go too high or you'll overinflate and wear the center of your tire and get crappy handling/traction.

Yep and you'll find the tires wont last long with that much air in them!
More likely to get a flat/burst tube as well which is something you want to avoid.

I wouldnt keep it on 38 in most cases.

On other Hybrid forums the recommended tire pressure is 44 psi. I tried the first week or two at the book value of about 35 psi but I did notice a small increase after inflating them to 44 psi. The tire can easily handle this but some people find the ride too harsh and drop the pressure.

I have a friend who works at a place with a truck scale (resolution of 20# increments) and I weighed my car there once. My car had a full tank of gas except for the 50 miles I drove during the day or roughly 1 gallon of fuel and also had me in the car since I drove it onto the scale. I had a trunkload of computer parts weighing maybe 50-100 lbs as a guess. The displayed weight was 3,120 lbs. If I weigh 180, parts weigh 100 lbs then that is about 2,840 lbs or a close enough estimate of the weight so we'll say 2,800-2,900 lbs with a full tank of gas and me. Neat. All that with 110-hp. =) If the driver is not included then the car weight could be near the listed weight of 2,898# (listed in the book). I think most books list the curb weight with a full tank of gas but I might be mistaken. If they are claiming 2,732 lbs then that is definitely without fuel.

44psi is max inflation specs for the tire, what that means is the air expands in the tire after getting warm, if you already got it set to max and it expands to much you risk having a blow out

what i normally do when i want to maximize economy at the expense of handling, is i run about 4-5 psi UNDER the MAX COLD PSI rating whcih is 44 on most passenger car tires... may be 35 on some in which case i'd run the 35.. but i dont like to go over 40 on a car.....

yep hes right i got 40 max on all four tires with a tire size of 195/75 or 65 R15 i can't really remember right now. some hybrids like ours were availible with pressure relief valves built into them to prevent overinflation it was an option i have right now and seem to work well. Also go according to climate and the higher the PSI the the ride diffrence will be be a bit more notable.
