Hi gals/guys
I have a problem. I know I have to lose weight. 5'10'' 185lbs. I want to get around 160-165. I start a exercise routine and I quickly get very bored. I have tried the following things: running on a treadmill at home, running outside, and riding a bike around. I'll do this straight for one week and get very bored and don't exercise for about 2 weeks then start up again.
Do I just need an exercise partner?
I really need to lose this weight.

Maybe find a gym to see if they have some kind of monthly special dieting/fitness program. Minimize the processed foods and bad stuff from your eating habits. Or you can try looking at a picture of Adriana Lima and then look at yourself and say to yourself every morning that "No girl wants to f*ck my fat ass"......it worked for me. Out of all seriousness, I joined a gym so the amount of money Im paying monthly is my motivation to keep it up.
Well, if you are really serious about losing weight, then you will exercise. Honestly, if you get bored fast, you are not really committed. 99% of the time why diets and exercise programs fail is because the person doesn't put any effort into it.
Try something different, play basketball, racquetball, tennis, swimming, etc... When I first started out and wanted to lose weight, I bought a few tae-bo videos and cardio kickboxing vids. Some ppl think that they are corny, but I lost 20lbs in 3 months doing them 3 times a week.

Keep a log book. Switch up your work out daily. I only stay on one machine for 10 minutes then run to the next. This way I never get bored. I also work out the second I get home. That way nothing can distract me and it is a part of my day.

that's the key--you don't realize you are exercising, you're trying to win. at least I am. I get bored of running, too. it's great exercise, but what a drag. I started snowboarding last winter and couldn't believe what a workout it is! i discovered muscles I never knew I had.
as always, keep in mind you might gain weight in the form of muscle.

Speedracer, you can theoretically lost weight just by changing yoru diet. Not that I am telling you not to exercise because it is important, but I would look at your diet first before you exercise. You can exercise all you want but if your diet isn't in check, then it isn't gonna hlep you lose weight.

Losing weight take LOTS of effort believe me, this coming from a person who lost 55 lbs. since March. Just get an iPod or MP3 player and then from there pick out some hardcore rock music turn it on and start. It will help you get pumped to workout and also keep you in the mood, or pop a couple Stacker 2's and it will get you energized to workout plus help in the weight loss process.
So I am better off working out for 4 minutes than I am spending 15 minutes on a bike barely making it to the end. Then getting on an elliptical and doing the same for 15 minutes? I already push myself to fatigue and do not just get on a bike and move my legs. Is HIIT still better? Or is it just better than casually trotting on a treadmill or on a bike for 30 minutes?

No, work outs aren't 4 minutes long. You need at least 20-30 minutes, but not 45-60 minutes. If you are working out only 15 minutes now, then you aren't doing enough. You don't switch machines. read it carefully
Basically, you warm up for 5 minutes. After warm up, you jog for a minute, then run as hard as you can for a minute, then jog for a minute, then run for a minute...see the cycle? Each person has a different time sequence, but you should be keeping your heart rate at or above 65%.

well i have changed my diet for awhile now. i dont eat processed foods. its just a mind game. i like the idea of exercising right after getting off work. make a routine.
5'10" 185, and ur needing to lose weight? damn dude u must be tiny, I'm barely 5'9" @ 260, and I'd be happy losing 50 ish or less. 200 sounds nice though.

Hey, I see you're from Carbondale/Champaign. If you're ever in the St. Louis area and want to come workout with me at either of my gyms (one is in midtown St. Lous and the other is in the Belleville, Il area) I'm sure I could help you out.
speedracersong, here's one possibility you might not have thought about - fat requires less calories to maintain than muscle. Keeping that in mind, I always recommend weightlifting as part of a program to lose weight for several reasons... if you only do cardio to lose weight, you're only battling fat on one front when you could be fighting it on potentially three fronts - 1) diet 2) cardio 3) weightlifting (which, in turn, will speed up your metabolism and accelerate the weight loss). Also, I personally feel better about myself since I started gaining muscle. People notice it and it's a good feeling. On top of that, it simply feels more masculine to lift weights than run on a treadmill. That might not be a determining factor for everyone, but looking more masculine, to me, is a great feeling.
Simply altering your diet will have amazing effects though. Steer clear of processed grains (as a rule of thumb, white = bad and brown = good,) fried anything, foods with ingredients you can't pronounce, etc. You can take it as far as you want. Over the years, I've gone to a diet that is mostly organic. It's very important to me that my food isn't processed and, even if you don't pay attention to the health benefits of such a diet, the effects on how you feel day-to-day are undeniable.
At the end of the day though, motivation doesn't come from an outside source. Sure, if I have a bad day, I might watch part of a professional bodybuilder's DVD to give me a little jump start, but the drive to work out is a purely personal matter.
