Can a body run lean?

Kind of like a car can run lean. You know the leaner it runs the stronger it runs to a certain point. Cause I jushad my surgery a week ago, and for the past few days since I can eat, and im on shakes ive had alot of energy. I try to work it off by running and just kepping busy, but it dosen't work. I'm probably running on about 800-1000 calories a day, comapred to my former around 3000 a day. And I have a ton of energy. Im dropping weight like mad ive lost 12 pounds, but feel just as strong as ever. So, am I just running "lean"?

You are not in a good place.

If you were formerly at maintenance of 3000 cals per day, and now you are at 1000 cals per day, you are doing an extreme cut. Add to this the fact that your metabolism is running fast, in order to heal your surgery.

If you body demands a certain caloric intake and it's not getting it, your body feeds upon fat stores, then it feeds upon muscle(protein is converted into energy). One way or another, you body will have it's way. Your weight loss is the proof of your body feeding upon itself.

If you continue to go like this, you will not only have a poor recovery from your surgery, you will end up severly depleted of muscle and other protein containing structures. Joints and even your central nervous system will be damaged.

I would strongly recommend that you find a way to eat at your normal maintenance caloric intake.

I kind of gathered that, from your post.

You can make a high calorie shake that won't make you fat, if you can swallow.

First, take a cup of dry oatmeal and put it into a blender or food processor and run it until the oatmeal turns into a powder. Add one cup skim milk, 3/4 cup cold water, a tablespoon of nestle chocolate drink powder, a few dashes of cinnamon, 3 tablespoons of olive oil, and 3 or 4 scoops of chocolate protein powder(my favorite is Optimum). Blend together and drink through a straw. You can substitute 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter for the olive oil, but that may make it too thick for drinking from a straw.

This shake will come to almost 1000 calories, and it tastes good. The oatmeal provides fiber that you are prolly lacking in your current diet, and it's a source of good carbs. It's better than any pre-packaged shake mix.

You need to be taking a good multi-vitamin.

I wish you a rapid and good recovery from your surgery.
