so does anyone else thing this is completely wrong? they were just talking about it on the radio and like the majority of people didn't see whats wrong with this whole concept.
basically, if you dont know, the next survivor is separating groups based on race and theyre competing against eachother.
i think this is a HUGE step back for racial rights and desegregation. granted, the contestants are all volunteering for this, but they should be the most ashamed of it. martin luther king jr. is rolling in his grave right now.
if this needs to be in the political forum, by all means move it. i just thought id start it off here so more people could be aware of it and could discuss.
Yeah its a pretty stupid idea....they should just stop with that show I mean what they are in there like 8th 9th damn season....its freakin old think of something else.
We are not all the same. This is awesome. We don't have much longer to see these separate cultures. Soon enough everyone will be a little bit of everything. Everyday I see more multiracial couples with kids. So that kid is getting an interesting set of elders. Different cultures stress different ideas while at the same time they all stress progress and growth. So why not show what the different subcultures do and how they handle obstacles. I was at the Grand Prix of Sonoma yesterday and there were probably 100k people there and maybe 100 blacks. When I drive down in the Delta it seems that the majority of guys fishing from the shore are Asian and Hispanic with 1 white guy. A lot of our cultures have blended and meshed together which is great. A lot of our cultures have remained separate which is great. Why not put it on display. I am sure the way each of these groups handle the same problem will be different for each group. None of them will be wrong they will just be different.
You are different because of the color of your parents(if they raised you) skin.
I don't think it's wrong. I mean, maybe if they were forcing these people to do the show, then yeah it would be wrong. The "contestants" or whatever chose to do the show, along with the stipulations provided.
i don't think it is right. I also think "heritage" is a better word than "race." Race implies a bigger difference between people.
MLK once said that one day people would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Although the formation of the groups is not a judgement, the "winning" team would create a judgement like this.
closing your eyes because it is accepted is not a good idea. Heritage is race to 90% of the world. Odds are if you are white you have the heritage of a european culture. If you are asian you reflect the cultures of Asia. This is not racist and no one is going to become racist because of this show. This is simply a show. There is a huge difference between the "races" Why can I go to the mall and not hear a group of Asians coming but I know where the group of black girls are even when I can't see them? Its not racist its their heritage. No matter which way you slice it we are different. It doesn't make you racist to notice patterns. Why can you tell someone is white, asian, or black by their voice even if they are 3rd generation in the same city? It is because of who they were raised by. Now who they were raised by changes how they were raised. It doesn't mean any one group is right or wrong it just means we are different and to ignore that is wrong.
if a hypothetical black guy who was raised in greenwich, CT is still going to be on the black team...and hes probably "whiter" than most white people. in the same respect, a white dude raised in a predominantly african american neighborhood is still going to be on the white team...
so what you are saying about subculture and background doesnt work. you are taught from what is around you. true, a lot of it is how your parents teach you and what their background is, but a lot of who you are is your environment. just like in the movie "trading places".
im not arguing that every group of people have their own inherrent "talent"...but is that really a concept for a show? to showcase those differences? all its gonna do is perpetuate the stereotypes.
I want them to do this show. I want every ethnic slur in the book used between the races too. Then maybe they'll piss off enough people to get Survivor booted from TV for good. That'd be sweet.

hahaha I'm with this guy here. I'm tired of hearing about that stupid show. Matter fact all the shows like survivor and that damn american idol crap to. What ever happened to real shows like the cosby's and damn who's the boss or anything. If I had the power to get rid of reality TV I so much would and also make a law to never be able to show any of that crap on TV ever again or else you get the gas chamber.
Meh.... I don't think it's as big of a deal as what's being made of. I'd worry more about the fact that we still have to state our ethnicity when applying for a job.
Oh and BTW.. Heritage and race are two seperate things.

- they separate based on age, nobody cares
- they separate based on gender, nobody cares
- they separate randomly, nobody cares
- they separate by race, shut the ****ing planet down.
Why? I mean, they finally got to race simply by process of elimination and people freak out. When I heard about this, I didn't even make the connection since I'm not racist at all. But for those people that are racist, they'll notice this and they'll have a problem with it. Even if you don't have a problem with different races, if you notice situations where people are singled out by race, that makes you racist. I didn't notice it at all. It's just another idea of how to separate people....if they separated by IQ, would you have a problem with that? Alphabetically? Gay/straight? Who cares, it's just another difference between groups, they have to be separated somehow.
People freak out at this, yet I go 10 blocks and I end up in Chinatown where thousands of Chinese people, BY CHOICE, have chosen to separate themselves from the rest of the city and only associate with others like themselves in situations they feel comfortable in. What the hell? I've never understood that.
I'm hoping this is the last season of survivor. Stupid show.
But in any case, it's not RACISM. That would be where a race is used as a basis of discrimination. This is NOT that, it's just dividing and segregating.
Then again, that's the point, the survivor producer is HOPING for a lot of people to talk about the stupid show so that it can revive it's falling ratings.
ok...not racism...but isnt segragation a product of racism? the participants are obviously not being prejudiced against, theyre there of their own free will (and the desire for money...), but the whole concept of the show...its based on race, obviously.
to comment on dex's reply, thats being a little naive man. noticing differences is racist? no, i dont think so. thats like saying martin luther king jr. was a racist because he noticed that blacks were being treated unfairly. if you dont notice an injustice, thats being blind and ignorant. if youre just walking around oblivious to whats around you, thats not progress.
how is it racist of me (because i started this thread ill use myself as an example) to point out something that i think is wrong? that makes no sense. yes, its another way to separate people...no one is disputing that. i dont know if you remember, but this segregation thing has been done before. and from what i've been taught a lot of people died to end it. and i have another example for you, during WW2, when the nazis had all those concentration camps in germany and all over europe, and killed millions and millions of innocent people, like jews, gypsies, other "undesirables"...and after the war when the camps were liberated, the allies asked the town people why they didnt do anything? how they could have this go on in their back yard and go along with it? you know what they said? they said that they didnt know. that wasnt a good excuse then and its not a good excuse now. not noticing makes it worse.
chinatown and harlem and and little korea and whatever else...those are communities. people will tend to live with those they feel most comfortable with. people with a similar culture and background. but even then, i cant agree with you that its 100% by choice. a lot of it has to do with economics. youre not gonna see a fresh off the boat family move into an apt. on 5th avenue or central park west. you know why? because they cant afford to live there. so theyll move to a 1br in chinatown because its cheap and because people who are familiar with their background will be sympathetic to their situation. so its not by choice, but by circumstance.
I don't think you(pbfoot) want people to not be racist. I think you want people to look at someone and not even register that they are Mexican/black/white. It is a good thing to want. Hell I wouldn't mind that and I won the lotto on birth(white, male, 6'2''). It is just not realistic, you know its not realistic but it what you seem to be asking for. As long as we are not all the same color we will have these situations. In high school there are the Asian, African, Mexican clubs. In college there is the black student union. In the real world there is the black chamber of commerce. People are not going to these groups because they are racist. Fat people tend to hang out with fat people, military guys tend to hang out with military guys. It isn't that they all think their group is better than the other groups it is just that you are more comfortable with those who are like you.
Survivor is not Nazi Germany they are a TV show. They will be segregated for what 5 episodes which probably is 10-15 days in the real world. Then they will be mixed in with everyone. Its like I said this show will not make anyone more racist or less racist.
