ok...not racism...but isnt segragation a product of racism? the participants are obviously not being prejudiced against, theyre there of their own free will (and the desire for money...), but the whole concept of the show...its based on race, obviously.
to comment on dex's reply, thats being a little naive man. noticing differences is racist? no, i dont think so. thats like saying martin luther king jr. was a racist because he noticed that blacks were being treated unfairly. if you dont notice an injustice, thats being blind and ignorant. if youre just walking around oblivious to whats around you, thats not progress.
how is it racist of me (because i started this thread ill use myself as an example) to point out something that i think is wrong? that makes no sense. yes, its another way to separate people...no one is disputing that. i dont know if you remember, but this segregation thing has been done before. and from what i've been taught a lot of people died to end it. and i have another example for you, during WW2, when the nazis had all those concentration camps in germany and all over europe, and killed millions and millions of innocent people, like jews, gypsies, other "undesirables"...and after the war when the camps were liberated, the allies asked the town people why they didnt do anything? how they could have this go on in their back yard and go along with it? you know what they said? they said that they didnt know. that wasnt a good excuse then and its not a good excuse now. not noticing makes it worse.
chinatown and harlem and and little korea and whatever else...those are communities. people will tend to live with those they feel most comfortable with. people with a similar culture and background. but even then, i cant agree with you that its 100% by choice. a lot of it has to do with economics. youre not gonna see a fresh off the boat family move into an apt. on 5th avenue or central park west. you know why? because they cant afford to live there. so theyll move to a 1br in chinatown because its cheap and because people who are familiar with their background will be sympathetic to their situation. so its not by choice, but by circumstance.
I understand what you mean, I guess there's another way to put it.
separating based on race = okay
discriminating based on race = bad
They're simply separating them, not saying one is better.
i see what you guys are saying also. i am 100% for making sure different cultures survive through time and that people dont forget where they came from. i think the worst thing that could happen is if everyone in the world is exactly like everyone else. but it just seems to me that survivor isnt going to do that. thats not the goal of this "experiment" of theirs. all it looks like to me is them saying "lets put a bunch of black people in one group, a bunch of white people in another, some asians in a third and see which of them can kick the crap out of everyone else"...its a recipe for conflict...shouldnt be surprizing since thats what makes "good tv".
what it should be is different people learning from eachother, interracting with eachother and understanding what makes eachother different and unique and what everyone can learn from eachother.
I've never watched it, and this won't change that for me. In fact I've never really watched a reality show....Unless you count American Hot Rod and American Chopper in the same group as Survivor and Big Brother and The Bachelor and those other staged reality shows.
- they separate based on age, nobody cares
- they separate based on gender, nobody cares
- they separate randomly, nobody cares
- they separate by race, shut the ****ing planet down.
What he said ^
Who cares, really? I don't. Their ratings are so low that they need the negative publicity. Just canx the stupid show already.
smells like raitings.... since they are 100% out of ideas.. this is whats called a "last ditched effort to get that last drop of blood from a stone"
no nuch thing as bad publicity and all
That's the wierd thing. The show actually has phenomenal ratings, the 9:00 Thursday spot is actually a very good slot to be in and there are huge mounds of people that watch it religiously. I've seen every episode of every season, I trade shifts at work to see it. Basically, I like human savagery at its finest, watching the most honest people in the world screw other people for a chance for some green. I think it's the top rated reality show on TV, some people hate it simply because others like it, but some really don't like it. It's cool, either way.
I met 2 of them, Jenna from the first one and All Stars, and I also met Johnny Fairplay. I'll find a picture of us at the bar......
EDIT - had to modify it and upload it, I'm paranoid of you Photoshoppers!
Unbelievable how we're in the year 2006 and the "race card" STILL gets so easily played these days. Some of you are making a big deal out of nothing. Why not look at it simply as a World Cup Soccer game? You pick a team from whatever country that is represented by a certain Ethnic group. Whats so difficult/racist about that? "Survivor" is only a game and competition. These contestants made this choice. Focus on REAL racism that still occurs in the U.S., not whiny Liberal agendas...
