okay, so the word 'native' was taken out of context but, since we were established as a country, that being america, the english language has been THE language of the country. so why should the spanish learn our language? well, for one reason, it is a different time period than what you are referring to as well as a different country! as for them taking over, i bet they will, not in my life time but they will eventually, actually i am sure they will take over.
no, i did not keep indian traditions but the white people came in with force, the mexicans are not. they do not have militia, they have unorganized gangs and that is about it and they are not fighting for the freedom of their people, they are only concerned with crime! and yes, the children of illegals do have a say and that in and of itself is unfortunate. that means one man and one woman can come over here, breed (not mate and have offspring but breed) evermore increasing our taxes to pay for their births and raising them as well as education. as for disrespecting other countries, that is a gross speculation as well as a horrible assumption that 80% of americans are rude...that is just not right. find me a figure of that and then we will talk more about that, and i am talking about a study done with more than 300 people in a longitudinal study. i guarntee you it has not been done. i am familiar with the constitution, i know what illegals can and cannot hold as well as natuaralized immigrants and what they can hold. what i said is this, if you want to have a say, become naturalized, if you don't then quit bickering because you have no say in what goes on in this country. the offices they can hold will barely make a difference in the major scheme of things. now, yes i know that their children can but they are not illegal immigrants.

Well, the last time I checked, the U.S. did not have an official language. I don't even think the Founding Fathers would've wanted one.
I'm sorry, I just don't get what the big deal is with schools teaching in Spanish or with businesses wanting people who are bilingual. Then again, I've been speaking two languages all my life. I've also studied/learned a bit of French and Italian, but that was because the languages interest me.
That's the whole thing, the US SHOULD have an official language. That is THE language that 90% of all transactions are done in. It's the language of the government. If we standardized that we would do a log better to have a unified country, rather than the type of country that France has... where theres a subculture within that country, that just breeds resentment. If the immigrants today were required to learn english, there wouldn't be as much animosity and could better intigrate into society.
^ i agree, english should be the language of america. not only it is the language of the government but it is the language of business. silverdevil, you were saying about a take over of immigrants in the future (in politics) i think they are the ones that need to learn english, they need to learn our language if they even want to enter politics.
It still seems like a paradox to me. This is the land of the free yet we want to restrict you to a language; you can live and speak in any language you want so long as you do it in English. It seems like such a contradiction to the founding principles of liberty and happiness to me.
Maybe society would integrate better; who knows? But it comes at a cost of liberty and freedom that I don't believe is right.

There are lots of things that fit in that blank. Just because we are free does not mean we can wander around and do anything we want. There are definite restrictions placed on us by our government. Making english the official language is not restricting anyone from using their own language. What I have a problem with is not the teaching of spanish, but the creation of ESL classes for non english speaking students. If you choose to enter our school system, you need to be able to speak enough english to keep up with the normal American student. I have known people go all the way through high school and come out the other end not even having a basic handle on the english language. THAT is annoying and should not be tolerated.
Are you kidding? This is anything BUT the land of the free. We are "more free" than most countries, yes...
In any case, you ARE free to speak whatever language you want. Just in official channels, like government and business, you should have the common decency to speak in the unofficial (hopefully official by then) language, English.
People all over the world speak English... why? Because it makes good business sense to cater to some of the richest people in the world. You'd think that people in this country would get the hint....
If you think that the government restricting lanquage would be contradictory to freedom then I think you really need to take a llok at some of the other that the federal and local governments have done. Restricting language should be the least of peoples worries.
you know what i think is more of a disgrace than anything? Oon the news the other night, they were doing interviews of people doing the protests...one of the people asked was a male student. the question:"what are you out here protesting for and what are your thoughts on the situation?" the kids response:"(laughing) i don't know!" this is just f'ing ridiculous!!! maybe that will shed a little light on why i have no tolerance for illegals and the damn protesting! why should i care about their feelings when they skip school (a free education) to protest on something they know nothing about? i spit on you!
