I hate to say it, but you cannot assume everyone celebrates Christmas. I don't and i am WASP. I don't really care if people say merry christmas too me, but I would rather they not because they are not respecting my views. I feel happy holidays should be the correct choice of words. It doesn't anger me, but again, people celebrate different things and this country has no "official religion." I did not post my views in the other thread about christmas, but I think judaism/christianity views dominate this country's federal holidays. I even think holiday should be removed and replaced with vacation or day off because holiday implies that it is a "holy day." But whatever...I am against the majority.
I hate people that get "offended" by crap. Or the people that are activists on behalf of the people that are "offended". More often than not, there are no actual people that are offended, and people are just banning stuff (like a freaking decorated tree in public?) that "might" be offensive to someone else.
IMO, I don't see how a country that is not supposed to have ties between church and state have religious holidays. I could see if the government was run by religious leaders but in the US/Canada, there are not supposed to be govt ties with any form of religion. That is why these countries were founded...to give freedom of religion. I know that Judeo-Christian views dominate both US and Canada, but if the government is supposed to be separate from any religion, then it should not have federally sanctioned religious holidays.
Personally, I am not "offended" by Christmas wishes. However, I don't believe, so why should partake?
If you look at all the US/Canada holidays, they celebrate
1) Christian holiday
2) Jewish Holiday
3) Saints
4) A specific person
5) A special day in the formation of the country
6) Recognition of family
What about all the other religions? It is ok for them not to get any type of recognition? I understand the come back will be "if they want recognition, then tell them to go back to their country." Unfortunately, if that is your response, then you have failed to recognize why the US was formed.
whole thing is B.S. If you don't like it then maybe you should rethink why you came here in the first place.
Nobody said you HAD to do it so STFU. This is the way it's done HERE....if you don't like how it's done HERE then go back THERE!
I dare say that I would be looked at with down-turned eyes had I gone to some other country and got all upset about their religious holidays....
first of all, youre in canada....moot point. lol
second of all, my family came to america because of religious persecution...we came here because of religious freedom in america...because america was a non-secular country.
i dont get angry or offended when someone says to me "merry x-mas", but it does bother me because people assume that i am something that i am not. you KNOW people would be saying sh!t if i were to wish everyone a "happy hanukkah"...
its all about mutual respect. "merry x-mas" is excluding every other holiday...what is so difficult about saying "happy holidays"??

im with rob on this one.
what I'm saying is this.....if I went to another country I wouldn't expect everyone to do what I do and I certainly wouldn't get offended or pissed off when I saw it either. The fact that someone wishes you a merry christmas is not so much a direct reference to being Christian....it can be looked at as someone simply wishing you well that otherwise might not give you the time of day. The 'Holiday Season' tends to do that to people....I like it.

.
I really dont think anyone will care if you tell them Happy Hanukkah, I wouldnt.
People are taking this way out of proportion. If you feel that christmas shouldnt be a national holiday then start a petition call you local government but dont just bitch about it (not speaking to anyone in particular here).
ok i don't get offended if someone says merry christmas to me. i just don't say it cause its not what i believe in. i just say "you too" lol. my gf is christian and im jewish so its really funny near the holidays. we are doing christmaskah lol!
the holidays brings out the WORST in people. no joke. maybe not in canada but here in GA people are more grouchy and bitchy and in the end they might still say merry christmas but they are a hole 2 seconds ago so what am i supposed to think?
i think its stupid to get in trouble for saying merry x-mas but at the same time i think its dumb that folks get upset when i don't say it back. i say happy holidays also. im with pbfoot.
