There is no first national language. It is up to the states to determine their own official language. New Mexico claims both english and spanish as their official languages, and a lot of other states must accept it too, since many state papers are in spanish as well english. Just got to get with the times, we're a multilingual society. Only way to change it is make english official and make it where all legal documents must be in english. That way when foreigners come they will be totally immersed in english and not be able to use their language to communicate anywhere. That's why there are a lot of overseas language programs so you can get a totally immersed experience in the language you're trying to learn. I plan to go to Japan for two weeks next summer to do just that.
Why are people so afraid of immigrants speaking other languages. It has to be fear because nothing else is so irrational.
See if you go to other countries, like say somewhere in asia or africa, you have to learn the language they speak to live there. The whole country doesnt chenge itself so you can live there. You change to live there.
In america we let thousands of illegal immigrants in the country every year, and instead of kicking them the hell out we give them jobs and make it so that every sign in the stupid country has spanish on it too.

Because, you cannot communicate with them. I work construction and the roofers are mexicans. They are always in the way and their van is always in the way. I try to tell them to move their van and they just look at each other like, what did he say and keep on working.

Thats just plain stupid.
Actually, the situation you describe is not totally accurate. My cousin just got back from a 3-month trip in China and she didn't know a single word in Chinese. Now she knows the basics: hello, good-bye, thank you, and bathroom. She got by with just her English. Do you know that English is the second most-spoken language in the world? It's the reason that all air traffic controllers must speak English (it was going to be French but English won out). My point is that I bet these immigrants can at least say/understand the basics as well (i.e. "my name is Pedro," hello, etc), even if they choose not to speak it.
Also, why should the have to learn the language if they can get along just fine without it? English is hard to learn and these people can find work and a place to live without knowing it or embarrassing themselves trying to speak it. Do you know why they are able to do so? Capitalism, my friend. People want cheap labor and they are cheap. So, the influx of Spanish-speaking people won't slow down until the jobs available to them decrease. Do you really think companies want to start hiring people who charge more? I don't think so. It would be dumb for them to do so. It's quite a pickle, my friend. Unless the government steps in and starts a huge oversight project with fines to these companies, expect it to be the same. And government won't do that because that would put companies out of business and slow the economy.

I can understand the communication problem. However, I don't think it's going to get better anytime soon.
