Well... that's what smalie25's original post was about.
You see, here we have three different political parties (the one's that really stand out, I men): Theres the PNP (New Progressive Party, pro-statehood), the PIP (Puertorrican Independetist Party, pro-independence), and the PPD (Popular Democratic Party, the one in the middle... don't want statehood nor independece... we just want to be part of the US, but don't want statehood...).
This fight has been going on since 1917, I believe... since the Jones Law was passed...
First it was a dispute over Independence or Statehood... in April 23, 1936 an act was passed to permit Puertorricans to choose either Independence or not (Yes would provide independece without any monitary help forn the US government, no would leave us as what we were).
One of the leaders of the Partido Liberal (Liberal Party... something like the modern PIP), Luis Muñoz Marín, saw that this was an obvious attempt of the US at letting us destroy ourselves, letting them be free of giving us economic help. Therefore he said that he would not accept this voting... with his people behind him.
He then created his own party, the PPD, the one in between...
And the fight has been going on ever since.
I have more info I could share, but I can't right now, I've gotta go to the hospital soooo... I'll post it up when I'm back (if ever...)
My leg hurts...

lol
