i just got these in an email from my sister, i have not verified them...but these are quotes from when Clinton sent in troops to Bosnia. and an interesting fact is that no US troops were killed in Bosnia (correct me if im wrong). compare that with nearly 2000 US troops killed in iraq.
it is quite interesting how two-faced some people really are...particularly in the media. people who really should be unbiased and objective.
Quote:
"You can support the troops but not the president."
--Rep Tom Delay (R-TX)
"Well, I just think it's a bad idea. What's going to happen is they're going to be over there for 10, 15, maybe 20 years."
--Joe Scarborough (R-FL)
"Explain to the mothers and fathers of American servicemen that may come home in body bags why their son or daughter have to give up their life?"
--Sean Hannity, Fox News, 4/6/99
"[The] President . . . is once again releasing American military might on a foreign country with an ill-defined objective and no exit strategy. He has yet to tell the Congress how much this operation will cost. And he has not informed our nation's armed forces about how long they will be away from home. These strikes do not make for a sound foreign policy."
--Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA)
"American foreign policy is now one huge big mystery. Simply put, the administration is trying to lead the world with a feel-good foreign policy."
--Rep Tom Delay (R-TX)
"If we are going to commit American troops, we must be certain they have a clear mission, an achievable goal and an exit strategy."
--Karen Hughes, speaking on behalf of George W Bush
"I had doubts about the bombing campaign from the beginning . . I didn't think we had done enough in the diplomatic area."
--Senator Trent Lott (R-MS)
"I cannot support a failed foreign policy. History teaches us that it is often easier to make war than peace. This administration is just learning that lesson right now. The President began this mission with very vague objectives and lots of unanswered questions. A month later, these questions are still unanswered. There are no clarified rules of engagement. There is no timetable. There is no legitimate definition of victory. There is no contingency plan for mission creep. There is no clear funding program. There is no agenda to bolster our over-extended military. There is no explanation defining what vital national interests are at stake. There was no strategic plan for war when the President started this thing, and there still is no plan today"
--Rep Tom Delay (R-TX)
"Victory means exit strategy, and it's important for the President to explain to us what the exit strategy is."
--Governor George W. Bush (R-TX)

Okay...? The quotes just go to show what a lot of people overlook - Bush isn't the only less-than-perfect President we've had. I've been saying in political discussions on this site for years that Clinton was just as shitty of a military commander as Bush has proven himself to be. The difference is that Clinton had better public relations and no countries had such lucritive business deals with Bosnia like they did with Iraq.
With a few days off and a bit of research, you can find the same two-faced type of quotations from Democrats supporting Clinton's actions in Bosinia and such whereas many of them later said war was never justified when Iraq became an issue, but, amazingly, those weren't included in your sister's email.
Don't get me wrong - I'm against this fiasco in Iraq (I supported taking Saddam out of power, but it was planned disgustingly) but it's ridiculous how much time people spend trying to bring the problems of one party into light when their own party has the exact same problems.
I'm all for pointing out problems, but it wouldn't kill people to be honest about their own party aswell.
the thing is, that clinton still pulled the situation through and somehow made the fiasco work, and im not even sure if it was considered a fiasco. i really dont think it has to do with a better PR team. i think as a leader and a president, he was more capable than bush is.
clinton was just as much of a draft dodger, but i dont think he denied it or tried to cover it up. and he never claimed to be a military leader, he just did the best he could. bush is prancing around in a flight suit pretending to be something hes obviously not. and pretending badly at that.
im sure i can find the democratic quotes. the point was that what the republicans said completely applies to iraq, but because they are bush's cronies they are supporting it this time...even though its more of a fiasco. they arent supporting the party, nor the country, they are supporting bush...the man. and as far as benefitting america, that sort of thing does nothing.
btw, im not a democrat...im just sharing something i found interesting and opened it up for discussion.
In terms of American life, yes, the Bosnian conflict was more successful than whatever the hell is going on in Iraq. If you look at total life lost, however, Bosnia was just about as bad as it gets. Assistant Sec. of State Richard Holbrooke described it as "the greatest failure of the West since the 1930s." Over 200,000 Muslims were victims of genocide. Over 20,000 were missing and assumed dead. Roughly 2,000,000 had become refugees.
It raises the question of whether or not American lives are more important to us that the lives of citizens of other countries. Eventually, Slobodan Milosevic gave in.
Now, this isn't to deny that G.H.W. Bush screwed up, too. Both he and Clinton waited too long to get involved, in my opinion. The only reason I can find that Bosnia isn't considered a massive screw-up of both Presidents is that the first Bush waited out his term, doing nothing, and Clinton had wonderful PR.
Politicians are Politicians. They twist the truth to say what they want it to say, and to show the other side as bad as it can be.
I could get TONS of quotes from modern day Dems showing how hypocritical they are. Why? Because they are politicians too... they do the same thing Repubs do, they always have, they always will.
Anyone that seriously thinks that they can trust politicians is too idealistic and needs to get out in the world and realize how it works.
On a seperate note, I honestly support the Bosnian conflict less than the Iraqi one primarily because:
-Hussain was an avowed genocidal dictator that killed far more than Miloslavic
-We were helping spread more muslims around by supporting the psychopathic albanians
-Bosnia was mostly a press ploy to get attention off the blatant sexual affair Bill had with Monica, rather than Iraq which was at least a greedy grab for oil, and at most, an idealistic crusade to bring freedom and democracy to the middle east.

Bosnia war was during 92-95 bills affair 1998-1999
The Balkans are a war that's been brewing for 1000 years. From the Ottoman Empire to WWI to Bosnia to Kosovo, it's all the same ethinicities and groups, steeped in tradition and hatred. Yes, Kosovo and Bosnia, and even Serbia in 1914, are the same war.
Afghanistan was a nation harboring terrorists. Iraq was an oppressive, rule-breaking WMD using country who practiced genocide. They are not the same war...
You need to read up on your history and current events, rather than swallowing whatever other people give you whole...

the war from 1992-1995 was among other things Bosnia versus Serbia. During 1995 they signed the dayton treaty, which ended the war.
The Kosovo conflitct is a different war, the native albanians that live in Kosovo (which is a part of serbia/yugoslavia) are the dominant majority in that part, so they want to be their own country/be with albania. Now please tell me what albania has to do with bosnia. Thier conflicts are 4 years apart. You are the one who should read up buddy
