take off glove box (one rubber holder on each side that you pop out) and then it will fold down. then you can take off that black piece and pull out each filter. one comes out and then the other slides and comes out.

so you're saying you can clean an air filter but not a cabin filter?
The only filters that can be cleaned are filters that are replaced and designed to be cleaned, and the cleaning often involves putting oil back onto the filter. As far as I know, there are no cabin filters that are ment to be cleaned.
Mine were worse then that. I don't think they'd been changed ever. 87,000 miles...There were piles of dirt and leaves and other crap...Man what a difference it made.

I'm tempted to look at the K&N website to see if they have a "million mile" cabin filter. You know, the one that's going to add a few ponies and torque? LOL
Dust and Pollen Filter Replacement (With Air Conditioning)
NOTE: LHD type is shown, RHD type is symmetrical.
The dust and pollen filters should be replaced every 48,000 km (30,000 miles) or 24 months whichever comes first. Replace the filters more often if the air flow is less than usual.
1.) Open the glove box.
2.) While holding the glove box (A), remove the glove box stop (B) on each side.
3.) Hang the glove box down.
4.) Remove the filter lid (A) from the blower unit, then pull out the first dust and pollen filter (B). Slide the second filter to the left and pull it out.
5.) Remove the filter (A) from the housing (B) and replace the filter.
6.) Install the filters in the reverse order of removal.
