I am changing my timing belt this weekend and am not sure where the pullies line up for tdc.
does anybody have any information on this. I cant afford a helms book just yet but its time to change the belt and need to know.
Thanks
on the camshaft pulley, crank pulley, and another pulley, there are marks that line up with marks on the block. When you get the new belt on, all the marks should line up with the marks on the block. if they dont, you have to redo it untill they do.

the cam gear has marks that line up with the top edge of the head and on one of the spokes it says "UP" that faces..... you guessed it, up hehe Now on the crankshaft there is a timing belt drive pulley. There should be a notch in the face of it that is supposed to line up with the little arrow that sticks out of the oil pump face. The keyway in the crank should face straight if I remember correctly. Make sure everything lines up exact. If you arent sure either stop and ask someone or turn the motor over very gently clockwise with the plugs out with a ratchet to make sure there is no contact with the valves. That way at least if its wrong it wont ruin your motor on start up. If its wrong you will know, and then have to start all over again. Bottom line is it really should be done right the first time though.
^What he said. ALSO! Be really carful tightening the belt as well. When I did my 95 DX I drove around with this whirring sound coming from my hood. I asked Honda and they said it was my tensioner making the noise. Basically takes the longevity down to about 50k as opposed to 100k. I had to break it all down again and loosen it. After you finish, make sure you listen for that on the test drive... I actually don't know how the set-up is on the 7th gen, but I'm sure it's generally the same layout.
Also, I see alot of people using AEM cam gears, would that do anything for my car or is it only ideal for highly tuned Vics?

if your belt starts making noise or is loose, you have a bad tensioner. If the tensioner makes noise, it needs replacing. The timing belt doesnt need to be adjusted, the tensioner keeps the tension at the proper amount, unless its bad.

I meant after I did the job it was making noise. And it was a brand new tensioner; I don't know about the 7th gen's, but on the b15 I had the timing belt tension was adjustable by a small bolt that went through the center of the tensioner pulley. I made mine too tight first time around and it was making the noise. After I loosened it a bit the noise went away.
