Hello Guys,
What kind of engine oil would you recommend for a 1999 honda civic with a 1340 cc engine.
I just bought it and the previous owner was using a 40 grade oil. My mechanic is recommending that I upgrade to a 20w 50 oil.
What would be the advantage of doing that and what type of oil would you recommend.
Thanks

Civics are meant to run with 5w30 for economy, changed every 3750 miles. You can run 10w30 in the summer time, but it's not necessary. I've never heard of anyone running that thick of oil.
I run castrol or valvoline regular, but I find the whole oil debate a bit theoretical.

Honda recommends 5w20, most of us prefer 5w30. Also, i put 20w50 in my F750, putting that in your civic would probably result in you giving your mechanic more business than you'd like.

Ya honda recommends 5w-20 but 5w-30 turns out to be alot better especially during hot weather. So use some 5w-30 and I either use castrol or mobil1.

Also, for you transmission, get the honda stuff for either auto or manual because you save in the long run.

the 5w20 recommendation is only for 01+ civics and only because they wanted to get slightly higher mpg numbers. has zero relevance to the engine specs or operation. many other car companies have done this too, in some cases using the exact same engine as a previous model year. older civics pre 2001 are all recommended 5w30.

Do you know Motorcraft 5-20 works very well. It is made by Conoco Phillips who will be suppling oil now at the dealer level rather than Mobil who did just that for years, At Wally you can find it $14 5qts. Good bang for the oil buck.
