I have an 02 EX that makes blue smoke, the tech said it's most likely the valves leaking, not piston rings. Is it hard to replace the seals myself, and where can I get the seals?
Or if it is too hard, how much does a job like that cost on average in Houston?

i dont think its that hard, since just the valve cover comes off and not the head. i could be wrong, but it should be somewhat simple. you need special tools tho. seals prolly gonna have to get from dealer. i think the amount of seals will determine how long it takes. prolly need to change em all? i found this diy

Valve seal are easy, but you have to pull the head and remove the valve springs to get at them. Once the springs are off, just pull them off with a pair of pliers and then tap the new ones on with a rubber mallet. OEM Honda valve stem seals are color coded for intake and exhaust, however aftermarket valve seals are one size fits all. I've used aftermarket valve seals on a couple of heads without any issues, so no worries there.
If you buy a head gasket set, it comes with a bag of valve seals.

Re: Can I replace valve seals myself? I'm burning oil
help please.
Im new on here.
I have a MB6 shape 1999 reg 5 door hatch back civic vtec 1.8 vti.
yes im from uk.
flippin sweet car except for the following
i was getting blue smoke for a couple of mins after a cold start.
was told it was piston rings.
then was told its the distributor
then maybe the fuel injectors
then maybe it just needs a tune up.
oil was going low,i was told that vtecs get a prob that they get a leak and when vtec kicks in the oil sprays out but when stood still no leak.
what do i belive???
2 days ago i was driving and all of a sudden the engine sounded like it was going overdrive like something got stuck. the car was shaking and i seemed to have less power.
when i stopped at lights the revs were going right under 1000 as if it is going to cut out
feels like the pistons are struggling
u no like when ur phone vibrates when it rings. like that but bigger.
took my car for a diagnosis
report said this
"check engine on diagnostic computer no faults logged in memory
check compressions - no compression cylinder 4
indicates possible valve problem"
they said that prob a bit of dirt has got stuck and over time its burned out the valve so the cylinder is sucking in the air but there is no explosion and no power coming from that cylinder
can anyone help as to what that means?
what parts exactly need changing?
does the engine need a rebuild or can i just change the valves from that cylinder?
should i change them all?
i dont want to scrap the car cuz i got plans for it.
i dont want to take it for some greedy engineer to do more then what is needed.
please help so i have an idea of what to expect.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
