Detailed smoked out taillights DIY w/ pictures

This is the stuff I used. I Ordered it from www.Testors.com
The part # for the tint is [ RC294 ]
The part # for the clear coat gloss is [ 1961]

BTW, make sure to order 2 can of the tint spray cuz 1 wont be enough.

I did my TYC Altezzas but this method works for anything so here is whats next.
Make sure you clean the surface really well, I used Cinch because it is a great glass
cleaner. Make sure to scrub every part of of the surface. When done cleaning go over
the surface of the light with a hair dryer to make sure it completly dry.

If you are doing this on a floor make sure to use plenty of newspaper or as I found
out the hard way this will happen after you are done tinting.

Now its time to spray. Shake up the tinting spray really well.... I mean really really hard
until you arm starts hurting just like after you've just.... nevermind.

This is very importent: Keep the spray can about 12 inches away from the taillight.
This is crucial because if you keep it closer you will get leaks.

Now start spraying and evenly going back and forth... back and forth....
back and forth over the surface. Make sure you dont stop spraying.... back and forth
and guess what... back and forth again. This is what my lights looked like after about 30
seconds of going back and forth of non stop spraying. In other words, my first coat.

After the first coat let it dry for about 30-45 minutes just to be exactly sure that
everything is dry.

When the first coat dries get the spray and start spraying again, back and forth.
My second coat took me about 60 seconds of non stop spraying, thats when the light became
black and you couldnt see the inside anymore. So for your final coat just spray until
it gets dark enough. Dont forget to keep the can about 12 inches from the surface
AT ALL TIMES!!

When you are done tinting, let it dry for about an hour and put some clear coat gloss on it.
The gloss goes on the same way as the tint... about 12 inches fromt he surface and back and forth.
I know its not a "must" but after I did it the lights looked better. They were like
glowing and no more dullness. Here is what they look like after 2 coats of tint and 1
coat of gloss, the lighting is weird..... you can see how they actually look on my car
as you scroll down.

This is stock.

here is what they look like on the car after the install.

Off

On without break pressed

Turn Signals (hazard lights blinking)

Reverse Lights on (they look white but in the pic they look red)

With break pressed

Good Luck!

i dont see why not, both altezzas and oem have the same plastic material and tint is tint so it'll darken them the same.

haha, if a lot of peeps start smokin out their altezzas i can say i'm the first one to do it on the coupe (clownprince did tezzas on sedan).

Would this work on headlights, maybe just one coat so they are lightly coated?

This will work with headlights without a doubt, that is in fact my next plan. I'm not going to smoke out the actaul headlight but I will buy clear headlight covers and smoke them out.

But if you would want to smoke out the actual headlight lens, it will work the same exact way.

Really nice job, yeah, I am not really into the black look, but maybe one coat would look alright. It's tough to say from your shots though.
Maybe worth an experimentation, just to see if it turns out. Nice DIY none the less.

I'm thinking that it would have been better to open and do the tinting from the inside...It seems that the tint would eventually start to wear off over a period of time and due to the weather and all.

The clearcoat will help with that alot. Mine has faded somewhat because I didn't clear them but some other people that did it when I did cleared theirs and haven't had a fading problem

nope, but I haven't had any problems yet. It's no worse than the covers that you can get at Auto Zone for trucks and such. And to be honest, my lights are more visible now that the chrome isn't reflecting as much other light from outside the light
