Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

The pictures show below were not taken by the person that wrote this, they are just a guide and do not necessarily correspond to the text written here. Please note that this is for the EX, other models are similar though. Also be cautioned that the top mounting depth is about 2 1/8". You may be able to put a spacer in. Here's how:

  1. Remove screw inside door handle.

Pop out the cover using a very small flat screwdriver from the front and remove the screw using a phillips.

  2. Use small flat to pop open the cover inside the door latch.

    Remove two phillips screws there.

  3. Detach door latch by prying out from front,

and detach door latch connecting rod from clip by first unclipping it,

then popping the rod out from underneath.

  4. Remove power window switch panel (front of entire door handle).

Contrary to earlier reports, it is not necessary to remove the rubberized rear section of that.

Pop out the front of the handle, and slide forward. Remove the two screws you see in picture 3.

  5. Use panel popper to pry out tweeter section (if equipped) from hypotenuse of triangular piece.

    Let tweeter mount hang.

  6. Pull with fingers by inserting into front bottom of door panel (there is a space there)

and give it a good tug.

  7. Remove remaining clips by using the panel popper.

Insert panel popper between clip and door, and use leverage.

  8. Lift rear end of panel first, and then slowly work towards the front. Unplug all power accessories connected to door panel.

  9. You will now see the speaker mounted on the door. Insert panel popper into the slot located

at the top of the speaker frame and press down. Pull top half of speaker away from door slowly

until the metal clip has cleared the door. Lift lower half of speaker upwards.

  10. Check with
    Crutchfield

as to which speakers fit, as they have an excellent database of speakers

    to choose from.

    Crutchfield

will provide all the necessary hardware required to install the aftermarket

    speaker.

  11. I bought my JBL GTO620s from an independent retailer, and thus had to do modifications myself.

My speakers are mounted on the plastic frame provided with speakers. These frames are used to hold

the speaker grills provided for the aftermarket speakers. The hole provided by Honda for the stock speaker

is of a weird shape, so using the frame gave me the necessary clearance to mount the speaker.

The problem is not so much the speaker mounting depth, but more of the small hole provided. Once

you remove the stock speaker, you'll know what i mean.

For those replacing the radio as well, I highly recommend the kit from

    Crutchfield

. The best one I have found and you can mount flush.
