Background:
I got hired by a consulting company last August, they put together a TN VISA package for me and I presented it at the border when I was going through. They gave me the VISA lickity split with no issues and I ended up doing a project in New York for a few months with Pepsi. After the Pepsi project was over, the company decided to can me for illegitimate reasons so now I'm back in Canada.
Present Scenario:
I got another project through a different consulting company and when they found out I'm no longer with my old company, they said they'd bring me on with them so I could still do the project I secured earlier. So all is well, I work with this new consulting company and they get a bigger cut of my wages because I'm working directly with them now instead of with my original company. Am I losing you?
Problem:
I'm now employed by consulting company B but my TN VISA only allows me to work for consulting company A. I start work in New York on April 21 and I have to reapply for another TN VISA with this new consulting company so I can go to work on this project. I tried looking online for how long it takes for it to be approved by mail and the only literature I could find was someone on a forum saying it's currently taking like 4 months but as long as you have a receipt saying you applied, then you're good to work while it's being processed. This true? Also, I could simply apply in the airport at the border and once again get approved immediately, I'm just afraid if something goes wrong I'm stranded there, days before I'm supposed to start work on a major project. Do you think it'd be better to simply apply at the border since I'm fully qualified and should have all the proper paperwork according to what is says is required online? And if I do that, how much time should I allow between my connecting flights? Maybe I should just try and call the border if I can find a number....

Just read this, looks like I might be able to work while the application is being processed. What's your take on it?
Quote:
Employers must complete Section 2 by examining evidence of identity and employment eligibility within three (3) business days of the date employment begins. If employees are authorized to work, but are unable to present the required document(s) within three business days, they must present a receipt for the application of the document(s) within three business days and the actual document(s) within ninety (90) days. However, if employers hire individuals for a duration of less than three business days, Section 2 must be completed at the time employment begins.
