career choice

Hey everyone im having a hard time. Im either thinking of enrolling into college for police foundations or becomming and electrician. People told me to go to the union, where the hell is the union? this was for the electrician.

How would i get a job as an electrician and where would i go to find it.

Re: career choice

call any repair company in your area and they'll be able to tell you where or how to get ahold of the union. Some companies will do the training themselves as long as you sign a contract saying you'll be with them for X amount of years. Those are two odd choices btw.

Re: career choice

The problem is that where ever you are is not where others are. I would say that if you are looking to see how much money they make in comparison - well it would be relative to where you are.

I would suggest going down to the police station near you and talking to someone - I am sure they would be happy to have a public relations person or officer talk to you. After you do that, go to a local electrician and ask to tag along for a day. If you can accomplish this then take the time to reflect to see what you would want to do.

I would also suggest going down to the college and talking to each program director and seeing the pros and cons of each program and job.

Personally, out of the two I wouldn't do Policing because I would assume that depending where you are, you would take your work home with you so to speak. You may be thinking constantly of what happened during the day and the gruesome things you may see at crime scenes (dead/mangled people).

I wanted to go the route of electrician, but I don't like heights - and I didn't want to have to deal with the scrutiny of telling my employer that I don't like heights and the pigeon holing myself into ground work.

I am now finishing my degree in Urban Planning.

Re: career choice

You can never go wrong getting you degree... in anything!

I got my bachelors degree in physical education and teaching. I have a job in IT during the day and own a company on the side. It doesn't matter what you end up doing, just get the diploma and roll.. It shows you stuck with something for 4 years of (120-130 credits) and made that commitment. The rest is up to you.
