| Re: Telescope HELP! Whoa geeze, here comes the extent of my knowledge about telescopes based off what I learned in astronomy...
2 types of telescopes- reflector and refractor. Reflector uses a mirror, and the refractor uses a lense. With refractors, the downside is the colors will disperese- same concept as a prisim- a halo of rainbow colors (because light is being passed through a lense), and shifts the colors slightly. Umm, oh- if you can imagine the raimbow line up, you have red light being more, and blue light bending lese... so a planet like mars is going to have more distorted color than a planet like pluto (I know its objectionable to if its a planet)- assuming they were at the same distances. But thats more technical then you should be worried about. The tripods and mounts are cool marketing points, but get a telescope that has a lot of light gathering power- usually marked by a wider lense in refractor telescopes. Also be sure to make not of the viewable distance, (maybe thats bad word choice because arc seconds popped up in my mind)- I mean how far you can "zoom in" on the object. Its like digital cameras, a 10x optical zoom, is much better then a 2x optical zoom.
okay, end of telescope knowledge... I say google ftw!
