i was just wanting some advice about possibly going to puerto rico for my reading week / spring break whatever you want to call it.
so, i'm seriously cash-strapped and found that flying to puerto rico is somewhat reasonable for late february and it fulfills my requirement for warmth (any temperature that has a + number is a good sign).
how safe is it to backpack? what's the cheapest way to get from city to city? how long does it take to get from san juan to ricon? what are some things i should definitely watch out for? what are some things that i should definitely not miss? i don't know why i have this feeling that straying from the resorts is not a smart move... maybe i'm just paranoid...but i'd like to see el yunque and ponce if it's worth it.

I have been to San Juan a few times and it's definitely a pretty cool place. However, i didn't stay there long. I was always passing through on the way to cruises that left from San Juan. I took a few tours around San Juan though and there's definitely some things to do.

Stay in the tourists areas.....san juan can be rugged, you can easily wind up mugged or missing, no joke! just watch the news when your there.......I used to live in cabo rojo in PR
ok, aside from nookie's insistence that i give him an STD (to add to the collection =P ?), thanks for the replies. it sorta sucks that PR is not that friendly to those outside of the resorts. maybe i'll nix the idea...or just stay at a resort.
If you go, will you take me with you?* gets on hands and knees and begs desperately* I'm sick of the cold weather. I have a friend that lives there. I'm sure he could give you some tips on where to go.
Hey, I live in PR, hmmm, temp now is in the 80's,so warm :P...the places you're asking are apart from each other, rincon is in the west, ponce in the south and el yunque is the east, so if you want to visit them you'll be traveling a lot. the whole island is nice to visit, lots of places to go, lots of things to do. i know a lot of places are not so friendly here but as long as you take care of yourself you'll be fine and enjoying. it's like most places everywhere, it has good things and bad things. maybe not so "clean" as canada, but still a very nice place.

hey hondachic, i'll take you up on the offer! you know where i'm coming from eh? at least it was sunny today.
anibal, about how long would it take to get from san juan to rincon? and is public transportation ok?
i'm fine w/ dirty places and no-frills accommodation, those don't really bother me. i just prefer going out of the resorts, you know? experience the true country. besides, when the places are dirty and the ppl are poor, the ppl tend to be...well, they make up for it. they've somehow got something we north americans don't have and it's always amazing to see. well, that's been my experience anyway.
around 2-3 hours depending on traffic and time of the day...I've never used public transportation so i don't really know, quality is fine, what i don't know is the price, might be expensive, ~100 miles trip. People is mostly nice here, just watch for certain people, like any other place.
