88 CRX. Any and everything from a B16 to a K20 has been swapped into those things. Versatile, light car.
Miatas can be really fun too, really tossable, the RWD is great and theres been a few good turbo apps. out for them, I think someone even swapped in an SR20 and turboed the hell out of it.
i'm looking at used miatas now, everything from 1990 and on, they don't seem to have changed much. how competetive are they in auto-x or road race? same question for the crx too.

In my region the Miatas regularly whoop all the corvettes asses, by a few seconds, its funny because the corvette drivers always get pissed. Oh yea, theyre all stock
Miatas are really cheap to buy & maintain, im sure the CRXs are too, but im biased towards the miatas. I'll put it this way, the civic was fun & handled great, but after driving the Miata once, not even driving it to the fullest extent, it felt 10x better & more stable than the civic, I had way more control, and being 10 years old on all the original suspension, thats not too bad. And you can say good bye to understeer, hello to dorriffftoo!!
IMO, FWD cars are somewhat limited on the course. Im just now learning about the advantages in weight transfer that RWD cars carry that would seem almost useless to me to drive without. Now im not an expert on suspension tuning & dynamics or anything, just this is how im starting to look at it.
Oh yea, if you race something like 3 or more autoX events in the a miata, or any mazda really, you automatically qualify for Mazdaspeed sponsorship
i'm just thinking way ahead. i'd like to get an auto-x or possible road-race project car.
88-91 civic hatch
88+ crx
92-95 civic coupe/hatch
96-00 civic coupe/hatch
or even a miata, i miss rwd.
89-91 civic hatch Si and only the Si.... Great for STS, easily the best car for the class right now, try and get an 89, its the lightest by about 100lbs.
88 crx once again just the Si... and only the 88 (it was the best year). Great car for ST2 and CSP. Little known fact, the Integra Type R borrowed the rear suspension out of the 88 CRX Si...
the 92 Si would make a good car for FSP but thats about it... the rest of the civics are too heavy and too underpowerd.
Miata... great car for Stock and Street prepaired and possibly ST2... but be prepaird to spend a bundle if you run SP...
If you run an engine swap you could run Street Modified, but then you'll have to chase down heavily modified BMW M3's...
Personally I'm looking for an 89 civic Si, or an 88 CRX si... to run either STS or ST2... or a miata and run Stock or ST2... CSP is too rich for my blood.
Autocross: Because Life is more fun on three wheels......
"I know Solo only comes one minute at a time, but what an intense, non-stop, fast-forward car control exercise minute it is. Sure, the velocity is higher in road racing, but inside the car it is slow-motion in comparison. In Solo, the turns come like machine-gun rounds. "

For open track that would be a fun car... autocross.. Currently there is no class where the coraddo does very well. (at least none to my knowlage) but if you do get one the 4 cylinder Supercharged is better balanced then the VR6 (which has all the weight distribution of a lawn dart)

I'm a crx person, but any of those cars will be great project cars. What class would you want to be in?
