Re: DIY: TYC projector retrofit 2009

okay... cadillac H1 projectors are really bright and nice, but they are huge! no way they will ever fit. its as big as a TL projector lol. back in the garage they go. im working on the led holders this weekend and when the projectors come monday, i should be able to start testing setups and posting progress pics. my valeo h7's are coming from china so they have quite a ways to go. but i can start working on hid projector in hi beam spot.

Re: DIY: TYC projector retrofit 2009

mock-up of the tyc turn signal leds. i really hope the bigger cluster will fit in the housing, cause i dont think the small one will be bright enough.

Re: DIY: TYC projector retrofit 2009

those don't need heatsinks? okay, so you've mentioned like 4 different projectors now. have you settled on what you're doing yet? or are you just buying random parts?

Re: DIY: TYC projector retrofit 2009

no heatsinks, these are only mid-power leds running at 70ma. im still confused. the only thing im pretty set on is using the valeo halogen h7 as the lo beam projector because its a perfect fit. the d3s hid projectors are really big, so im not sure if they will fit in the hi beam spot. i may end up not using them and trying something smaller but idk what. right now its looking like a simple halogen retro lol.

Re: DIY: TYC projector retrofit 2009

theyre here! very nice looking. the problem is, well, everything. all the sizes arent what i expected and already thers no way i can fit the hid projectors or the cadillac ones without serious cutting of the housings which im not doing. i think ill just work on the leds for now.

after alot of pulling and some blisters, i get one side open. and then spend an hour cleaning all the lil blue fragments of glass from the last explosion lol. so far here are the two final turn signal designs, however im having problems with the lens. the middle ring looks fine, but the other pattern is distorting the leds and making some look like theyre burnt out.

the middle ring of 9 leds looks fine

still working on the park light which is also not working out as i expected

pic of the light taken apart

Re: DIY: TYC projector retrofit 2009

finally started on the leds. almost finished the parking light for one side. its a mess in the back tho with plastic weld and wires and silicone everywhere lol. but it looks great fron the front.

installed clear optic piece with 4 amber leds behind it

and lit up, very low exposure to show how it looks. they are much brighter in person.

Re: DIY: TYC projector retrofit 2009

got one side turn signal done. pics dont do it justice. the signals are very bright compared to park light. all the led work for this side is done now.

the rear

the front crystal clear!

park light and turn signal lit up at 12v (will be brighter at 14v on the car)

you can even see some light shine thru the side corner!

Re: DIY: TYC projector retrofit 2009

turn signal has 25 amber superflux leds mounted in the stock tyc bulb reflector, about an inch away from the clear plastic cover. this makes the leds completely invisible when the light is off. i wired 5 rows across in series and then routed the resistors and wiring thru the bottom. this way theres no mess if you look inside thru the orange window on the side.

thats chrome tape to make everything sparkle from the front. and it wasnt fun soldering them together. biggest array ive ever made

Re: DIY: TYC projector retrofit 2009

got them from a group buy at hidplanet.com for $30 for a tube of 60 leds. i actually have a second tube on the way cause i ended up using way more leds than i planned. i have 5 more going to the orange corner piece as a park light. still working on that and prolly will have pics tomorrow. i have to sand down the domes and shave the legs so they sit flush and fit in the small space.

either that or i might just make a plain board with chrome tape and no leds just to cover up the inside of the reflector. since there is an open hole now, you can see all the wires and inside stuff of the tycs in the sun.
